Ukraine starts electricity trade with Hungary under EU rules

MOSCOW. Feb 26 (Interfax) - Ukrenergo last Thursday held the first joint auctions for allocation of access to interstate grids for electricity trade between Ukraine and Hungary on the Joint Allocation Office (JAO), the European universal allocation platform.

"This means that Ukraine has started commercial electricity exchange under European rules with one more EU country," Ukrainian media quoted the company as saying.

Electricity was exported to Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Moldova in a total volume of 2,793 MWh on February 23, Ukrenergo said.

Electricity was imported from Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Moldova in a total volume of 1,018 MWh on Friday.

As reported, there has been no commercial electricity exchange with Hungary since 2022. Since November 2, 2023, joint auctions with Romania have been held on the Ukrenergo platform, and since January 16, 2024, Ukraine has held joint auctions with Poland on the JAO platform.

Additionally, joint auctions between Ukraine and Slovakia will be held on the JAO platform on March 4, 2024, with a delivery day of March 6. After the launch of joint auctions with Hungary and Slovakia, Ukraine will trade electricity with all neighboring EU countries under European rules.
