Russia must create national genetic database by Sept 1, 2025 - govt resolution

MOSCOW. Feb 16 (Interfax) - The Russian Ministry Science and Higher Education has until September 1, 2025 to create and launch a national base of genetic information, under a Russian government resolution published on the legal information website on Friday.

"The Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education has until September 1, 2025 to ensure the creation and launch of a state information system in the area of genetic information [called] 'The National Base of Genetic Information'," the document said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law on the legal principles of the system's functioning at the end of 2022. The law is due to come into force on September 1, 2024.

The purpose of the system is to "provide national security, protect the lives and health of citizens [and] sovereignty in the sphere of genetic data storage and use, and to ensure sharing of the information contained in it among Russian federal and regional authorities, local self-administrations and genetic data owners during their interactions in the framework of carrying out genetic engineering activities," the law says.
