Russian Federal Penitentiary Service reports Navalny's death

MOSCOW. Feb 16 (Interfax) - The Russian Federal Penitentiary Service's branch in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District has reported the death of Alexei Navalny in a statement on its website.

"Convict Alexei Navalny felt unwell and almost immediately lost consciousness during a walk at Penitentiary No. 3 on February 16, 2024," the statement said.

Penitentiary doctors arrived promptly, and "an ambulance was called for," it said.

"All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, but failed. Paramedics confirmed the death of the convict. The causes of death are being established," the statement said.

Navalny was convicted of fraud and some other offenses, including the establishment of an extremist network, the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK, designated as an extremist organization and banned in Russia). He was serving 19 years in Special Penitentiary No. 3 in Kharp in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District.
