Ukraine commissioned 662 MW of new renewable energy capacity in 2022-2023

MOSCOW. Jan 29 (Interfax) - Ukraine commissioned 662 MW of new renewable energy capacity in 2022-2023, Ukrainian media quoted Energy Minister German Galushchenko as saying in an Energy Ministry press release.

About 312 MW was commissioned in 2022 and just under 350 MW in 2023. These are solar, wind, biogas and small hydroelectric power plants.

"Development of clean energy is one of the key factors in ensuring energy independence and energy security for Ukraine," Galushchenko said.

"Ukraine's Energy Strategy, adopted last year, envisages that we will continue our path towards the production of clean energy. As early as 2030, the share of renewable energy sources should be at least 25% of the energy mix, and Ukraine should achieve climate neutrality by 2050," he said.

He also said the Ukrainian nuclear industry currently produced more than 55% of the country's electricity. Nuclear power plants produced 10% more electricity than projected by the Unified Energy System indicative balance in 2023. The Energy Strategy calls for building nine new nuclear power plant units, with work on four possibly beginning in 2024.
