Moldovan authorities approve termination of 8 CIS agreements

CHISINAU. Jan 24 (Interfax) - The Moldovan government approved the termination of another eight agreements signed within the CIS frameworks at its meeting on Wednesday.

These documents include the agreement on principles of providing weapons, military hardware and other material supplies to the armed forces of the CIS states and on organizing research and development processes. Among other documents are the agreement on groups of military observers and collective forces maintaining peace within the CIS, the agreement to cooperate in technical and material supply of agencies fighting against terrorism and extremism, and the agreement to coordinate policies in the gas transit sphere.

The government also approved the withdrawal from the agreement on cooperation on ensuring energy efficiency and energy conservation, agreements on cooperation in the fight against diabetes and HIV, and the agreement on cooperation on education in the field of electrical power.

Moldovan government spokesman Daniel Voda said these decisions were made as the agreements became obsolete and are no longer suit the current agenda. The goals stated in the agreements do not coincide with the goals of Moldova, he said.

The authorities have determined 119 agreements signed within the CIS that have no value to Moldova, and preparations for denouncing 79 of them have begun, he said.

In 2023, the Moldovan parliament denounced 55 CIS agreements, and the termination of all legal effects of the treaties has already been coordinated with the CIS Secretariat for 36 of them. Moldova signed a total of 282 different agreements as part of the CIS, Voda said.

Chisinau stopped paying contributions to the CIS and other organizations on the CIS platform in 2024. Under the Finance Ministry's decision, the amount for paying annual membership fees to international organizations decreased by 16 million lei (some $900,000), from 66.5 million lei to 50.2 million lei in 2023.
