Turkish parliament's approval of Swedish NATO bid is Turkey's sovereign decision - Peskov

MOSCOW. Jan 24 (Interfax) - The Turkish parliament's decision to approve Sweden's bid to join NATO is Turkey's sovereign decision, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"This is the Turkish parliament's decision. After all, Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic alliance. That is an obvious fact. It has its obligations and its negotiating processes with allies," Peskov told journalists when commenting on the Turkish parliament's decision.

"This is Turkey's sovereign decision," he said.

As reported earlier, the Turkish parliament voted in favor of ratifying Sweden's accession to NATO in a 287-55 vote. The document has yet to be signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

After the completion of the ratification process in Turkey, Hungary will be the only NATO member that has yet to approve Sweden's membership bid.
