Russia keen to boost trade, economic ties with Niger - Deputy PM Overchuk

MOSCOW. Jan 16 (Interfax) - Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk has discussed with Nigerien Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Finance Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine bilateral cooperation in various sectors in Moscow.

"The parties discussed topical issues of boosting bilateral cooperation in the trade and economic, investment, humanitarian and other areas of mutual interest during the conversation," a statement published on the government's official Telegram channel said.

Russia is keen to expand its trade, economic and investment ties, as well as its trade with Niger, Overchuk said.

"This requires further joint steps to develop partnership in such promising areas as agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and geological exploration," Overchuk said.

Zeine also plans to visit Serbia, Turkey and Iran as part of his foreign tour, the Mondafrique publication reported.

Zeine is accompanied by the defense, petroleum, agriculture, commerce, youth and sports ministers during his trip.

Niger's military deposed President Mohamed Bazoum from power in late July 2023 and proclaimed a course towards liberation from French and generally Western dependence, Mondafrique reported. The authorities have announced plans to diversify cooperation with foreign countries in all areas, in particular, in defense, oil production, and healthcare, the publication said.
