Ukraine going through heating season as planned - PM Shmygal

MOSCOW. Jan 16 (Interfax) - The heating season is going on as planned, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal said.

"Ukraine is crossing the equator of the heating season. Thanks to large-scale repairs in advance, amassing of energy resources, protecting critical infrastructure facilities, this fall and winter period is going on as planned," Ukrainian media quoted him as saying at a government meeting on Tuesday.

In total, 2.2 GW of thermal and hydro generation capacity has been revamped in the energy sector and the electricity produced is currently sufficient to cover domestic needs, Shmygal said.

"Thanks to increased export-import capacity, it is also possible to import large volumes of electricity from western neighbors and to attract emergency aid if needed," he added.

Ukraine is going through the 2023-2024 season at the expense of gas of its own production, and there are around 11.3 bcm of gas in the gas storage facilities as of today, Shmygal said.

"This is enough to successfully complete the heating period," Shmygal said.
