Turkmenistan to supply 1.8 bln kWh of electricity to Afghanistan in 2024

ASHGABAT. Jan 10 (Interfax) - Afghanistan will import 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from Turkmenistan in 2024, according to a contract signed in Ashgabat with Afghanistan's biggest energy company, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat or DABS.

"DABS CEO Muhammad Hanif Hamza and his delegation concluded a major agreement on the supply of Turkmen electricity in 2024 during a two-day visit to Turkmenistan. The deal is for the supply of up to 1.8 billion kWh of electricity through four lines: Andkhoy, Akina, Badgis, and Turgundi-Herat," the News Central Asia (nCa) publication said, quoting DABS.

During the meetings in Ashgabat, Muhammad Hanif Hamza confirmed that Afghanistan is committed to completing the construction of a 500 kW transmission line between Shebergan and Argandi, which will increase electricity imports from Turkmenistan.

The parties discussed the project to modernize the Noor-ul-Jihad substation in Herat. DABS and Turkmenenergo agreed to speed up the completion of this project.

Turkmenistan has been supplying electricity to the northern, northwestern and western regions of Afghanistan at preferential prices in accordance with existing contracts for several years. Turkmen electricity is also exported to Iran, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
