Azerbaijani ruling party nominates Aliyev for president in Feb 2024

BAKU. Dec 15 (Interfax) - The board of the ruling New Azerbaijan party decided at an expanded meeting on Friday to nominate incumbent Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for the early presidential election set to take place on February 7, 2024.

Azerbaijan has seen significant achievements and won a historic victory over the past 20 years under Aliyev's leadership, party deputy chairman and head of the party's central staff Tahir Budagov said.

The next presidential election in Azerbaijan was due to take place in 2025. Aliyev signed an order on December 7 scheduling an early presidential election for February 7, 2024.

According to the constitution, the president of Azerbaijan has a seven-year term of office.

Aliyev has been the president of Azerbaijan since October 2003.
