Azerbaijan's ruling party to nominate Aliyev as its candidate in Feb 2024 presidential election

BAKU. Dec 12 (Interfax) - The Yeni Azerbaijan (New Azerbaijan) Party will nominate incumbent President Ilham Aliyev as its candidate in the country's snap presidential election scheduled for February 7, 2024, the party's deputy chairman and central office head Tahir Budagov told reporters.

The party's board will discuss this issue at a meeting within the next few days, Budagov said.

As reported, Azerbaijan's next presidential elections were due in 2025. However, Aliyev signed a decree on December 7 on holding an early presidential election in the country on February 7, 2024.

Under the constitution, the president of Azerbaijan is elected for seven years.

Aliyev has led Azerbaijan since October 2003.
