Russian presidential election scheduled for March 17, 2024 - Federation Council resolution

MOSCOW. Dec 7 (Interfax) - The Federation Council adopted a resolution on Thursday to schedule the Russian presidential election for March 17, 2024.

"In fact, this decision signals the start of the election campaign," Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said at the house meeting.

By law, the upper house of the Russian parliament schedules the presidential election no earlier than 100 days and no later than 90 days before the voting date. The day of the Russian presidential election is the second Sunday of the month in which the previous presidential election was held.

However, if the Sunday on which the election is to be held coincides with the day preceding a non-working day, or that Sunday falls in a week that includes a non-working day, or that Sunday is duly declared a working day, the election shall be called for the following Sunday.

The second Sunday in March of next year falls on the 10th and ends the week that includes the holiday on March 8. Therefore, elections are scheduled for the next Sunday - March 17.
