Turkmenistan joining Global Methane Pledge - president

ASHGABAT. Dec 1 (Interfax) - Turkmenistan has decided to join the Global Methane Pledge, the global commitment to reduce methane emissions, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

"Today, from this high rostrum, Turkmenistan officially declares it is joining the Global Methane Pledge," the republic's state news agency quoted Berdimuhamedov as saying.

He said that Ashgabat had made preparations, taking UN Framework Convention on Climate Change recommendations into account and, in May 2022, had approved Turkmenistan's nationally determined contribution or NDC to the Paris Climate Agreement. Berdimuhamedov said this strategic document called for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 relative to the 2010 levels.

Berdimuhamedov also said that Turkmenistan would continue to work with international organizations and partner states on existing projects and programs to fulfill the conditions arising from the Global Methane Pledge.
