Five killed by hurricane in Crimea - republic head

ROSTOV-ON-DON. Dec 1 (Interfax) - Five people were killed by the recent hurricane in Crimea, the republic's head Sergei Aksyonov said.

"Twelve people were injured as a result of the disaster. Unfortunately, five people died," Aksyonov said on Telegram on Friday.

In all, the hurricane hit 320 populated localities in 18 municipalities, Aksyonov said. Power supply was disrupted in 273 populated localities and residencies of over 500,000 people. A total of 159 private houses, two residential buildings, 193 household plots and 60 country houses were flooded in three municipalities. Fifty-three people, including six children, remain at shelters.

Bank protection structures, beaches and embankments in Yalta, Alushta, Yevpatroia, Feodosiya, Kerch, Sudak and littoral villages sustained the biggest damage, Aksyonov said.

There is still no power supply to about 1,600 clients. Water has receded from 60 private houses, two residential buildings, 38 country houses and 83 household plots.

Blustery winds of up to 40 meters per second hit Crimea on Sunday. An emergency was declared. The damage was preliminary estimated at 39.7 billion rubles.

Just one fatality was reported earlier.
