Tajikistan provides about $457 million in 2024 budget for construction of Rogun hydroelectric power plant

DUSHANBE. Nov 28 (Interfax) - The Government of Tajikistan plans to allocate 5 billion somoni (approximately $457 million at the current exchange rate) in 2024 to continue the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power plant.

Of this amount, 2.8 billion somoni are planned for allocation next year from centralized budget funds, and 2.2 billion somoni will come from investment projects, the Khovar national news agency reported, citing the country's Ministry of Finance.

In January-September of this year, 3.7 billion somoni were spent on the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power plant, and by November 1, the amount had increased to 4.3 billion.

The 3.6 GW Rogun hydroelectric power plant, which is being built on the Vakhsh River, will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in the region. It consists of six 600 MW units. The hydroelectric dam, 335 meters high, forms the Rogun reservoir with a total volume of 13.3 cubic km and a useful volume of 10.3 cubic km. The plant is planned for use as a multi-purpose hydroelectric complex, which will include electricity production, water regulation and flood risk reduction.

The first unit of the Rogun HPP was put into operation in November 2018, and the second in September 2019. It is expected that the construction of the station will be fully completed by 2033; annual output is estimated at 17 billion kWh.

The official exchange rate as of November 28 is 10,953 somoni/$1.
