New British foreign secretary pays undeclared visit to Chisinau

CHISINAU. Nov 17 (Interfax) - New British Foreign Secretary, former Prime Minister David Cameron visited Chisinau last night on his way back from Kiev and met with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, according to the latter's social media post.

They discussed "Black Sea security, bilateral cooperation and our united stance against corruption," in addition to the situation in Ukraine, she said.

"Expressed gratitude for the UK's support to Ukraine: crucial for Moldova's security and the stability and prosperity of Europe," Sandu said.

Cameron also met with his Moldovan counterpart Nicu Popescu to discuss strengthening bilateral strategic relations, with an emphasis on the issues of the Moldovan community.

"We discussed such matters as the signing of agreements on the mutual recognition of drivers' licenses and lower roaming fees, which are initiatives that will give substantial advantages to our community in the UK. Additionally, we underlined the importance of stepping up cooperation in the war on corruption and the prosecution of those who harmed our state and citizens. Strengthening relations with the UK is a key element of enhancing the stability and security of our country," Popescu said.
