Poland's PSE again provides emergency aid to Ukraine by purchasing 900 MWh of surplus electricity

MOSCOW. Nov 7 (Interfax) - The Polish power system operator PSE provided emergency assistance to Ukraine on November 6 by buying 900 MWh of excess electricity produced by renewable energy facilities meeting a request from the Ukrenergo national energy company, Ukrainian media reported citing Ukrenergo.

This was the third time Ukrenergo asked PSE for emergency assistance amid a power surplus, the first instance occurred in June 2023 and the second on October 31.

"In order to maintain the balance between consumption and production and avoid limiting the renewable energy generation, Ukrenergo asked the Polish power system operator PSE on November 6 to provide emergency assistance by urgently purchasing 900 MWh of surplus Ukrainian electricity during three daytime hours," the company said in social media on Monday.

This measure helps avoid expenses to compensate renewable energy facilities for limiting power generation, Ukrenergo said.

On November 6, the Ukrainian power system recorded an electricity surplus due to the active operation of renewable power plants.

A power unit at one of the thermal power plants (TPPs) resumed operation following routine maintenance, the company said.

Currently, 427 communities in Ukraine have no electricity supply for various reasons, Ukrenergo said.

As reported, on October 31, PSE, provided emergency assistance to Ukrenergo by urgently purchasing 690 MWh of surplus electricity produced by Ukrainian renewable energy facilities.

On November 7, PSE for the second day in a row provided emergency assistance by urgently purchasing surplus electricity in the Ukrainian power system due to its overproduction, Ukrainian media reported on Tuesday, citing Ukrenergo.

"In order to maintain the balance between production and consumption, as well as for the operational security of the power system, in response to Ukrenergo's request, the Polish power system operator PSE provides emergency assistance by urgently buying 480 MWh of excess electricity during three daytime hours," Ukrenergo said on social media.

On November 7, 745 MWh of electricity is imported in the afternoon and evening hours of peak consumption from Slovakia and Romania, with a peak capacity of up to 116 MW in some hours, the company said.

Some 2,256 MWh is exported to Slovakia, Moldova and Romania in the night hours of the daily low consumption, with a peak capacity of up to 384 MW in some hours.
