Uzbekistan introduces fine for face coverings

TASHKENT. Nov 1 (Interfax) - Uzbekistan has introduced a fine amounting to between $405 and $810 for wearing face coverings in public places, the press service for the country's Justice Ministry said.

"According to the changes, wearing clothes that cover the face to a degree that makes identification impossible in public places leads to a fine in the amount of 15 to 30 basic calculation units (from $405 to $810)," it said.

The corresponding amendments to legislation have been signed by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The measures were taken to boost the effectiveness of maintaining public order and the effective operation of the Safe City system, which has been implemented by law enforcement agencies, the information service for the Senate (the upper chamber of the Uzbek parliament) told Interfax.
