Japan to launch new program of support for Ukrainian refugees in spring

MOSCOW. Oct 23 (Interfax) - Japan will launch a new program of support for Ukrainian refugees in April 2024, the program aims to help the Ukrainians adapt to living in Japan, including by learning its language and culture, Ukrainian media said with the reference to the Japan Times.

"The Immigration Services Agency said Friday that it will launch a program in April to help foreign nationals fleeing conflict zones adjust to living in Japan. [...] The program was designed mainly to help Ukrainian evacuees living in Japan, whose numbers top 2,500," the Japan Times said.

The program aims to facilitate Ukrainians' adaptation to living in Japan. For instance, it offers the six-month or one-year program to study Japanese and learn about the country's laws and customs.

The Immigration Services Agency will also cover the living expenses of Ukrainian refugees. Those who have sponsors are not eligible for the funding.

The Japanese government resolution, which allows foreigners with the asylum status to stay in Japan for a long time and find a job, will take effect on December 1, 2023.
