Georgian parliament fails to impeach President Zourabichvili

TBILISI. Oct 18 (Interfax) - The Georgian parliament failed to impeach Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili at a plenary session on Wednesday.

The decision to impeach the president was backed by 86 MPs belonging to the parliamentary majority. The votes of 100 MPs were needed for the president to be impeached. Representatives of the parliamentary opposition did not vote.

The ruling Georgian Dream party filed a lawsuit with the Georgian Constitutional Court on September 14 accusing the president of breaching the country's constitution. In particular, Zourabichvili was accused of breaching the constitution by making several trips to Europe without coordinating them with the government. The Constitutional Court confirmed Zourabichvili's breach of the Georgian Constitution.
