Belarus, TVEL sign agreement on radioactive waste management

MINSK. Oct 18 (Interfax) - The Belarusian Radioactive Waste Management Organization and JSC TVEL, the nuclear fuel division of Russia's Rosatom, have signed an agreement on cooperation in radioactive waste management, the Belarusian Energy Ministry reported.

"The agreement calls for cooperation of the parties in the area of creating and developing infrastructure for disposal of radioactive waste in Belarus, training of personnel for the operation of a near surface waste disposal point, as well as well ensuring the operation and monitoring of the point," the ministry said in a press release.

The agreement was signed by the director of the Belarusian Radioactive Waste Management Organization, Dmitry Logvin and TVEL's director of decommissioning programs, Eduard Nikitin.

The Belarusian Radioactive Waste Management Organization, which was established by decision of the Belarusian government, is responsible for designing, building and launching infrastructure for receiving and safely storing radioactive waste.
