Ukraine decreases pork imports 75% in Jan-Sept - Association

MOSCOW. Oct 16 (Interfax) - Ukraine's imports of pork in January-September 2023 totaled 10,000 tonnes, which is 75.6% less than in the same period last year, Ukrainian media reported, citing information from the Pig Breeders of Ukraine Association.

In monetary terms, imports decreased 71.5% to $23.6 million. In September, Ukraine purchased 2,200 tonnes of pork abroad for $5.5 million.

"Although in the first month of autumn, almost two-thirds more pork was imported than in August, most market players did not notice this, and the lack of supply supported average domestic prices," the profile association notes.

Based on the results of the nine-month period, the share of pork of foreign origin, according to the association, is about 2% of the total market, or 3%-4% of Ukrainian industrial production.

During three quarters of 2023, Ukraine imported pork mainly from Denmark (34.2%), the Netherlands (21%) and Spain (11.6%).
