Ukraine's buckwheat exports up 2.7-fold in Jan-Sept 2023, but there's no rise in export revenue

MOSCOW. Oct 12 (Interfax) - Ukraine's buckwheat exports saw a 2.7-fold increase by volume to 117,000 tonnes in January-September 2023 year-on-year, but grew a mere 11.7% by value to $15.123 million.

The largest markets for Ukrainian buckwheat were Poland (14.68% of the total volume of exports by value), Italy (13.8%) and the United Kingdom (8.23%), Ukrainian media said, citing the statistics published by the Ukrainian State Customs Service.

Last year's top three importers of buckwheat from Ukraine were Poland, which accounted for 13.63% of the total amount of such exports by value, Germany (12.76%) and Indian (8.16%).

Ukraine's proceeds from buckwheat exports stood at $48.608 million in the pre-crisis year of 2021. The largest importers were India (21.04%), Poland (8.48%) and Germany (6.91%).

As reported, Ukrainian farmers expanded their croplands for buckwheat in the 2023 season to a record 141,500 hectares for all years of independence, which is 14.2% more than in the previous year, and 34.7% more than in the pre-crisis year of 2021. The yield grew to 1.42 tonnes per hectare from 1.22 tonnes of hectare in 2022. Ukrainian farmers have already harvested buckwheat from 86% of the sown area.
