Extra wells drilled at ZNPP for safety in case of emergencies

MOSCOW. Oct 9 (Interfax) - Eleven wells have been drilled at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in Energodar to ensure a continuous water supply for removing heat from its fuel, the plant said on a Telegram channel on Monday.

"Extra wells have been drilled along the perimeter of the spray pond. The 11 wells ensure a water supply to the plant in the amount of some 260-270 cubic meters per hour," the report said.

The water from the safety system's spray cups is used to remove heat from the fuel which is in the plant's units, it said.

"The extra water volumes are enough to ensure the safety of the plant in case of emergencies. And this is not the only measure that has been taken," the plant said.

According to earlier reports, the search for additional sources of water for the Zaporozhye NPP began after the Kakhovka Hydropower Plant was destroyed and the Kakhovka reservoir dried up in June.
