First ship arrives in Kaliningrad from Northern Sea Route - Governor

KALININGRAD. Oct 6 (Interfax) - Cargo was delivered to the port of Kaliningrad via the Northern Sea Route for the first time, Governor Anton Alikhanov said in his telegram channel.

"Today the first ship arrived in the Kaliningrad region via the Northern Sea Route. The ship left Shanghai, sailed to Arkhangelsk, now to Baltiysk, and the end point is St. Petersburg," Alikhanov wrote.

Transport companies are now planning to make this logistics product permanent. It is cheaper and faster than through the Suez Canal, he said.

The governor's press secretary Dmitry Lyskov told Interfax that the Newnew Polar Bear container ship under the flag of China had arrived at the port. The ship belongs to the Hainan Yangpu New New Shipping Company, which began to develop a transport network with Russia along the Northern Sea Route. The capacity of the container ship is 1,600 TEU.
