Borrell expects EU to accept his proposal on providing Kiev with 5 bln euros in security support for 2024 by end of 2023

BRUSSELS. Oct 2 (Interfax) - The European Union countries could hopefully approve a 5-billion-euro security support package for Ukraine for 2024 by the end of this year, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President Josep Borrell said.

"I propose a new bilateral multiannual envelope on the European Peace Facility of up to 5 billion [euros for Ukraine] for the next year. I hope we can reach an agreement before the end of the year when we have to agree on the multiannual financial framework," Borrell said at a press conference following an EU ministerial meeting in Kiev.

The ministers focused chiefly on assistance to Kiev, including military support, he said.

"We have been talking about security commitments that we want to provide to Ukraine," Borrell said.

"The strongest security commitment that we can give to Ukraine is the European Union membership," he said.
