EU plans to increase gas import from Azerbaijan - European Commission spokesperson

BRUSSELS Sept 22 (Interfax) - Brussels and Baku have reached agreement on increasing natural gas deliveries from Azerbaijan to the European Union, European Commission spokesperson Tim McPhie said.

"We have a memorandum of understanding in place between the [European] Commission and Azerbaijan to increase supplies of gas and to build an energy partnership in the future, which looks at renewable energies as well," McPhie said at a press briefing in Brussels on Friday.

He cited statistics showing that Azerbaijan shipped 8.1 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas to the EU in 2021 and 11.3 bcm in 2022.

"And the objective under the memorandum of understanding is to increase deliveries to 20 billion cubic meters annually by 2027," McPhie said.
