European Commission proposes extending temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees

BRUSSELS. Sept 19 (Interfax) - The European Commission has announced its proposal that temporary protection status for refugees from Ukraine in the EU be extended from March 4, 2024 to March 3, 2025.

A communique published in Brussels on Tuesday mentions "more than 4 million persons enjoying protection across the EU."

"The EU activated the Temporary Protection Directive on March 4, 2022 with a unanimous decision by member states and it was automatically extended by one year," it said.

"The temporary protection directive provides immediate protection and access to rights in the EU, including residency rights, access to the labor market, housing, social welfare assistance, medical and other assistance," it said.

To take effect, the European Commission's proposals have to be approved by the Council of the EU.
