U.S. again calls on Russia to release U.S. citizen Whelan - White House

WASHINGTON. Aug 29 (Interfax) - The United States still believes Russia should immediately release U.S. citizen Paul Whelan, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday.

"Russia should release him [Whelan] immediately, and this is something that we have been very consistent about," she said at a press briefing.

Whelan, who is a citizen of the U.S., Ireland and Canada, as well as a British national, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage by the Moscow City Court on June 15, 2020.
