Ukrainian energy system receives record emergency aid amid new summer power consumption peak on Aug 21 - Ukrenergo

MOSCOW. Aug 22 (Interfax) - A new summer power consumption peak was recorded in Ukraine on August 21, due to which the energy system has taken a record volume of emergency aid totaling 2,000 MWh from Poland and Romania in the evening hours.

"Yesterday, on August 21, a new summer peak was recorded as the evening consumption peak exceeded the preliminary figure of August 16 by 1.3%. This is a lot, in view of the limited capacity of power plants to generate electricity due to repairs," Ukrainian media quoted the Ukrenergo national energy company (NEC) as saying on social media on Tuesday.

Ukrenergo had to use emergency aid from the energy system of Poland and Romania to cover the demand from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the company said. It totaled a record 2,000 MWh.

"Emergency aid is the last and most expensive emergency response measure for balancing the energy system, which does not require disconnecting consumers," the NEC said.

Insignificant volumes of electricity from Slovakia and Moldova are being imported on Tuesday from Slovakia and Moldova in the morning and evening hours with a peak capacity of up to 356 MW in some hours, Ukrenergo said. There are no exports.
