Putin, Raisi discuss development of Russia-Iran cooperation - Kremlin

MOSCOW. Aug 17 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken by telephone with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi to discuss bilateral cooperation in a variety of areas and their broader coordination in international and regional affairs, the Kremlin's press service said.

"Both sides expressed satisfaction with the high level of Russian-Iranian relations that has been achieved [and] reaffirmed their resolve to further develop bilateral ties on trade, energy, transport and logistics, and environmental protection," the press service said in a statement on Thursday.

The two leaders "discussed broader coordination in international and regional affairs, including in light of Iran's full membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and interest in taking part in BRICS activities," it said.

Putin also offered his condolences with regards to the August 13 terrorist attack at a mosque in the city of Shiraz, it said.

The terrorists entered the Shah Cheragh Shrine last Sunday and opened fire on clergymen. At least one person was killed and another eight were injured, one of them critically.

Islamic State (a terrorist group banned in Russia) claimed responsibility for the attack.
