Int'l efforts towards Black Sea Grain Initiative's reinstatement continue - EU spokesman

BRUSSELS. Aug 10 (Interfax) - The European Union views the reinstatement of the Black Sea Grain Initiative as a very important goal, considering the growth of global food prices, Peter Stano, spokesman for European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, said.

"The efforts taken by the international community, above all the United Nations supported by Turkey, are continuing. I think there is an international consensus on the need to reinstate the Black Sea Grain Initiative. This is very important not just for Ukraine but also for the food market and global food prices," Stano said at a press briefing in Brussels on Thursday.

There are no distinct stages or deadlines in this process, however, the efforts backed and assisted by the international community as a whole are ongoing, he said.

"We think it will be possible to reinstate the initiative, which is crucial for everyone, especially for the population of countries severely affected by the prices growing because of Russia's actions," Stano said.

Stano confirmed that Borrell had sent a letter to the foreign ministers of certain countries, urging them to put pressure on Russia so that it returns to the grain deal. He said the letter did not envisage specific replies to be made by specific dates.

"It was intended to share arguments with partners why we think it is important to act in this area. It was a step taken in the context of our efforts to organize international activity and increase pressure on Russia for reinstating this crucial initiative," Stano said.
