Authorities in Ukraine's Cherkassy region recommend that Hasidim refrain from visiting Uman on Rosh Hashanah

MOSCOW. Aug 9 (Interfax) - The Cherkassy regional military administration has recommended that Hasidim refrain from visiting Uman on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, while bolstering security just the same, administration head Igor Taburets said.

"There will be Rosh Hashanah a month from today. We recommend that pilgrims refrain from visiting Uman as much as they can," Ukrainian media quoted Taburets as saying on a social network.

He added that, same as last year, certain believers would choose to visit, and the authorities are taking measures to enhance security of the local population and visitors. "We held a meeting of the ad hoc commission on this matter today with the participation of Israeli Deputy Ambassador in Kiev Liron Finkelstein," Taburets said.

"First of all, we coordinate our security efforts. Just like last year, security will be enhanced [...], and we are considering other areas with due account of previous celebrations. This is about the provision of medical attention, public catering, public utilities, anti-epidemic measures and so on. The main priority is unchanged: security of the local population and visitors," Taburets said.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, celebrated two days in a row on the new moon of the autumn month of Tishrei by the Hebrew calendar. This is the beginning of the new Jewish year.
