Kazakhstan to launch new grain terminal at Kuryk port this year

ALMATY. Aug 4 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan is due to launch a grain terminal in the port of Kuryk on the Caspian Sea costing 8 billion tenge or around $18 million or this year, the Industry and Infrastructure Development Ministry told Interfax.

"As part of the expansion project of the port of Kuryk, Kaspi Grain Way LLP is financing the construction of a grain terminal at an estimated cost of 8 billion tenge with its own funds," the ministry said.

The terminal's capacity is 1 million tonnes per year. As part of the project, 18 silos have been built for storing 25,000 tonnes of grain.

All that remains to be done before launch is to install equipment connection it to the power grid.

"The terminal is scheduled for completion this year," the ministry said.

The new terminal will boost the transshipment capacity of the Kuryk port and grain exports to Iran, the Caucasus region and elsewhere, the ministry said.

It was reported in 2021 that the project, being delivered by Kazakhstan Temir Zholy JSC, Port Kuryk LLP and Kaspi Grain Way LLP, was scheduled for launch in 2022.

The port of Kuryk 90 km west of Aktau has a ferry infrastructure with rail and motor car docks designed for the transshipment of grain, petroleum products, fertilizers, chemicals and other cargoes. The design capacity of the port is 6 million tonnes of cargo per year.
