Moldovan parliament denounces another five CIS agreements

CHISINAU. July 31 (Interfax) - The Moldovan parliament voted at the last meeting of its spring-summer session in favor of terminating five more agreements signed within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), an Interfax correspondent reported on Monday.

The opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) boycotted the meeting after the ruling party rejected all of the opposition's initiatives, the correspondent said. In particular, the initiatives put forth by the BCS proposed removing the vote on the termination of CIS agreements from the agenda.

Thus, the documents denounced by the Moldovan parliament include the Agreement on Cooperation in Labor Protection, signed in Moscow on December 9, 1994, the Agreement to Facilitate Coordinated Policy in the Field of Standardization, Metrology and Certification, signed in Moscow on March 13, 1992, the Agreement on Support and Development of Small Businesses in the CIS Member States, signed in Moscow on January 17, 1997, the Agreement on Cooperation in Forming a CIS Unified (General) Education Space, signed in Moscow on January 17, 1997, and the Agreement on Technical Barriers in the Free Trade Area, signed in Moscow on June 20, 2000.

Moldova recalled its representative from the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly in early February 2023. Also in February, Foreign and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu said that Moldova was starting the process of withdrawing from several dozen agreements within the CIS. The country is a party to approximately 330 CIS agreements, many of which need revision, he said.
