Yermak, foreign diplomats visit Chernobyl NPP area

MOSCOW. July 18 (Interfax) - At the instruction of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, chief of the presidential office Andrei Yermak and foreign diplomats have visited the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant zone and discussed nuclear and radiation safety and security, Ukrainian media reported with reference to the presidential office.

The participants in the event included chiefs of mission of the Group of Seven countries, the European Union's Delegation to Ukraine, and chiefs of mission and members of the diplomatic missions of Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Turkey, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Brazil, India, Spain, the Republic of Korea, Egypt, and the Vatican, as well as the UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine.

Representatives of the Indonesian, Australian, Saudi Arabian, Argentinean, Mexican, and Chilean embassies to Ukraine joined the meeting online.

Yermak said this was the third meeting in this format.

Closed following an accident during the Soviet era, the Chernobyl NPP was chosen as the meeting venue "so that its participants could see for themselves consequences of nuclear safety breaches," Yermak said.
