Russian metallurgical industry should boost product competitiveness, enter new markets - Putin

MOSCOW. July 17 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated employees and veterans of the country's mining and metallurgical industry on their professional holiday, Metallurgist's Day, the Kremlin website said on Sunday.

"In our country, the mining and steel industry is deservedly considered one of its core and fundamental economic sectors. The highly skilled and well-coordinated work of miners, ore enrichment specialists, steelmakers, rolling mill operators, and other professionals is essential for fortifying the country's domestic industrial and defense potential, as well as maintaining the nation's industrial power," the statement says.

"Today, despite serious challenges, you carry on the remarkable professional traditions of your predecessors, while never forgetting the importance of achieving your objectives," he said.

"It is important to introduce, without losing pace, advanced environmental and energy efficiency standards, boost product competitiveness, and enter new markets. And obviously, we must also give the necessary attention to ensuring social benefits for the industry's current and former workers," Putin said.

The president expressed confidence that "moving forward you will continue achieving your goals for the benefit of Russia."
