North Ukrainian Nuclear Research Hub to be built in Kiev region

MOSCOW. July 14 (Interfax) - The North Ukrainian Nuclear Research Hub will be created in the city of Slavutich, Kiev region, built for employees of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP), Ukrainian media outlets reported, citing the social network pages of the state enterprise National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom.

"Its purpose is to create conditions for the development of the scientific and business elements of the nuclear industry and search for solutions for the development of green energy in Ukraine," the company said.

The hub will enable joining efforts of research institutes, educational establishments and energy companies to create new projects of nuclear power plants, resolve issues dealing with the safety of their use and the development of the related infrastructure, the company said.

"In addition, the construction of such center will facilitate the development of the Chernobyl NPP, the search for ways to use the excluded territories in the future, and the development of green energy on the basis of the closed-off power plant and enable considering projects for the storage and disposal of nuclear waste generated by the operations of Ukrainian nuclear power plants," Energoatom said.
