Ukrainian Railways registers subsidiary in Poland for cargo shipments to EU
MOSCOW. July 13 (Interfax) - Ukrzaliznytsia or Ukrainian Railways has registered a subsidiary, LLC Ukrainian Railways Cargo Poland (Warsaw), which will carry out cargo shipments between Ukraine and European countries, Ukrainian media reported, citing a company statement.
The subsidiary was registered at the end of June.
Ukrainian Railways Cargo Poland will initially provide a comprehensive cargo transportation service from Ukraine to final destinations in Europe and in the opposite direction, and will coordinate work with European operators, cargo owners and border crossings operating with 1435 mm and 1520 mm gauge rolling stock. The company will also control Ukrainian Railways rolling stock abroad.
Ukrainian Railways also said work on a strategy for its international division was almost complete and that its supervisory board would soon approve it.
Ukrainian Railways transported 70.5 million tonnes of cargo in H1 2023, which is 14.5 million tonnes or 17% less than the same period in 2022. This included 28.2 million tonnes of export cargo, 40% of the total and 15.4% less than the prior year.
Ukrainian Railways currently has 19 railway border crossings with EU countries and Moldova. These include 14 primary crossings, four of them for freight traffic towards Poland, two to Romania, two to Slovakia, two to Hungary and four to Moldova.
