ICRC emphasizes its work in Nagorno-Karabakh strictly humanitarian, does not transport unauthorized goods

YEREVAN. July 11 (Interfax) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) considers an attempt that was made to transport unauthorized goods from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh via the Lachin corridor unacceptable.

"The ICRC is aware of concerns raised about the transport of unauthorized goods across the Lachin Corridor and does not support any such activity. No unauthorized material has been found in any vehicle belonging to ICRC. All cargo is subject to customs checks by the Republic of Azerbaijan," the organization said in a statement.

Four hired drivers tried to transport some commercial goods to Nagorno-Karabakh using their own vehicles which were temporarily displaying the ICRC emblem, the statement said.

"These individuals were not ICRC staff members and their service contracts were immediately terminated by the ICRC. Our work along the Lachin corridor is always strictly humanitarian," it said.

This is essential work which has made it possible to evacuate more than 600 patients for medical treatment and to deliver medical supplies, food, and baby formula, the ICRC said.

"This essential work [...] must be allowed to continue. This work is always done with the agreement of the sides and makes a difference to the lives of thousands of people," it said.

The State Border Guard Service of Azerbaijan said earlier on Tuesday that the Lachin checkpoint temporarily suspended operations due to the instances of smuggling.

The discovered items included cell phones, chargers, and gasoline.

The Stepanakert-Goris road, also known as the Lachin corridor, which is currently monitored by Russian peacekeepers, was blocked by Azerbaijan on December 12, 2022. This is the only road between Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. The Armenian government has repeatedly declared the need to unblock the Lachin corridor.
