Russia's ATS designated trading operator on EAEU's future common electricity market

MOSCOW. July 5 (Interfax) - The Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) has designated Russia's JSC Wholesale Electricity Market Trading System Administrator (ATS) as the operator of centralized day-ahead electricity trading on the future common electricity market of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the EEC reported.

The common electricity market in the EAEU is supposed to start operating as of January 1, 2025.

"Systemic work on establishing a common union electricity market is now being done. An international agreement has already gone into effect, rules of access to international transmission (transit) of electricity have been approved, and the trading platforms organizing centralized trading of electricity futures contracts on the common market have been designated," the EEC said.

Last November, the EEC Board designated three trading platforms for centralized trading of electricity futures contracts: the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange (BUCE), Kazakh Wholesale Electricity and Capacity Market Operator (KOREM) and the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange (SPIMEX). Trading will be conducted in an electronic trading system using exchange mechanisms, namely anonymous double auctions.
