World Bank's head of operations for Eastern Europe appointed resident country manager in Ukraine

MOSCOW. July 3 (Interfax) - Gevorg Sargsyan arrived in Kiev on Monday to start his mission as resident country manager in Ukraine.

Before this appointment, he had served as head of operations for Eastern Europe overseeing the World Bank's programs in Ukraine and Moldova, Ukrainian media reported with reference to the World Bank's statement.

"Through our projects and technical assistance, we will help Ukraine achieve a prosperous, peaceful, and stable future," the statement quoted Sargsyan as saying.

Sargsyan, an Armenian national, has worked with the World Bank since 2000. From 2017 to 2021, he was the World Bank's manager of operations in South-East Asia based in Myanmar. He previously served as the Global Lead for Clean Energy at the World Bank, responsible for renewable energy and energy efficiency business lines. He also led energy and infrastructure programs in India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Armenia, and Georgia, and worked in a number of other countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Sargsyan is the author and co-author of several publications and papers dealing with clean energy and infrastructure finance. He has an M.S. in applied math and a Ph.D. (ABD) in economics.

As reported earlier, Vahram Stepanyan has led the International Monetary Fund's office in Ukraine since the end of June 2021, although he is currently working from Vienna.
