Russia in 2022 retains position among top 20 global agricultural exporters - Agroexport

MOSCOW. June 27 (Interfax) - Russia has retained its place in the top 20 global food exporters in 2022, the Russian Agriculture Ministry' Agroexport Center said in a statement, citing ITC Trade Map data.

Russia ranked 17th, increasing its share to 2.1% of world exports. Among the top 20, Russia has shown the greatest increase in exports of agricultural sector products over the last 10 years - 2.5 times.

"In 2022, Russian agricultural exports grew by 12% to $41.6 billion, including revenue from export sales of grain increasing by 18%, oil and fat products - by 25%, meat products - by 23%, food and processing industry products - by 1.6%. At the same time deliveries of fish and seafood decreased by 12% compared to 2021, dairy products - by 1.9%," the report indicates.

The top 20 supplier countries accounted for 69.8% of global food exports in 2022. In 2021, according to revised data, the share was 67.9%.

In 2022, global agricultural exports hit a new record, surpassing $2 trillion for the first time, up 7.4% from 2021.

The U.S. remained the largest agricultural exporter, adding 9.1% to its overseas sales for a total of $193 billion, while Brazil came in second, increasing shipments by 35% to $135 billion. The Netherlands dropped from second to third place ($121 billion, up 1.6%). Germany and China were also among the world's top five suppliers.

Among importers of agricultural products, first place also belongs to the United States with imports of $233 billion (an increase of 15% compared to 2021). China ranked second ($224 billion, up 7.2%). The top five largest purchasers also include Germany ($117 billion, up 3.7%), the Netherlands ($84 billion, up 5.6%) and Japan ($83 billion, up 8.6%).

As Agroexport said, there were significant changes in the structure of global food exports last year. Grain crops took the lead with a share of 8.8%. In 2022, revenues from global grain exports increased by 16% to $178 billion. Fats and oils rose to second place with an 18% increase to $173 billion. Meat products fell to third place ($163 billion, up 7%).

"The difficult geopolitical situation in the world has led to a transformation of agricultural exports. Russian companies have adapted to the new reality - they have restructured logistics routes and financial settlements with counterparties. The state, for its part, has adjusted the terms of state support and focused its efforts on maximizing assistance to business," Russian Deputy Agriculture Minister Sergey Levin was cited as saying in the statement. "Russian agricultural companies continue to increase their presence in the global food market, ensuring uninterrupted supplies and making a significant contribution to solving global food security problems," he said.
