ENTSO-E boosts Ukraine's electricity import capacity to 1200 MW - Ukrenergo

MOSCOW. June 21 (Interfax) - Capacity for Ukraine and Moldova to import electricity from continental Europe has increased from 1050 MW to 1200 MW, Ukrainian media reported, citing an Ukrenergo statement.

"ENTSO-E, the European network of transmission system operators, has increased the maximum available interconnector capacity for the import of electricity to Ukraine and Moldova from the continental European zone by 150 MW to 1200 MW," the company said on Telegram.

"Currently, electricity imports from the EU are a significant means of covering a possible shortage in the Ukrainian energy system. Ukrenergo continues to work with European network the operators to gradually increase the capacity of interconnectors for commercial electricity exchanges between the EU and Ukraine and Moldova," the statement says.

The Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam breach and drop in the reservoir's water level have caused power generation by hydropower plants to fall. The Ukrainian Energy Ministry has come up with an initiative to boost cross-border capacity to import electricity from Europe to 2 GW.

The ENTSO-E decision to gradually broaden opportunities to export/import electricity was reached on June 7, 2022, and commercial electricity exchange began on June 30. At the end of April of this year, Ukrenergo and ENTSO-E increased capacity to import electricity from the continental European zone to the Ukraine/Moldova block from 850 MW to 1050 MW. Capacity of 400 MW is available for electricity export from Ukraine and Moldova to Europe.
