Ukrainian port Reni receives bulk carrier with record deadweight

MOSCOW. June 14 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian port of Reni in the Odessa region has accepted the BLUE GATE bulk carrier with a record deadweight of 24,000 tonnes, which became possible thanks to the improvement of the port infrastructure, Ukrainian media reported with reference to a message of the Administration of Seaports on social media on Wednesday.

"The BLUE GATE bulk carrier with a record deadweight of 24,000 tonnes is being loaded at the Reni port today, on June 14. For the Danube ports it is the first dry cargo vessel of such a deadweight in the history of independent Ukraine," the administration said in the message.

The administration noted that the Ukrainian port on the Danube River was able to receive the vessel with the record deadweight owing to the measures for infrastructure development, which are being implemented by the Administration of Seaports jointly with the businesses and the Ministry for the Development of the Communities, Territories and Infrastructure.

The preliminary estimates said that investment in the infrastructure projects of the ports on the Danube will exceed $110 million in 2023, it said.

"Increasing the tonnage of the fleet and the intensity of ship calls, as well as further technological re-equipment of the capacities are steps that are essential on the way to raising the volume of transshipment by the ports of the Danube region," the administration's message said.

As previously reported, the cargo transshipment at the Reni commercial port in May 2023 reached 1 million tonnes, which was a record for this enterprise. In total, 391 vessels, including 134 sea vessels and 257 river vessels, were accommodated last month.
