Ukraine helps Poland by receiving excess electricity from latter's power grid - Ukrenergo

MOSCOW. June 13 (Interfax) - Ukraine provided emergency aid to Poland at the latter's request by absorbing 1,800 MW/h of excess power from the Polish energy system this past weekend, Ukrainian media reported with reference to the national power grid operator Ukrenergo.

Poland had excess power in its grids at daytime last weekend and asked neighboring countries to help it by absorbing it, and Ukraine received an extra amount of power this way, Ukrenergo said on its social account.

Ukrenergo stressed that the receipt of excess power from Poland did not mean its commercial import but precisely emergency aid.

On the whole, power generation in the Ukrainian system covers consumption, although the volume of available capacity is limited, which requires prudent power consumption, especially at evening hours, to lessen the load on the power system and keep it balanced, it said.

At the same time, the emergency assistance from Romania and Poland, totaling 1,600 MWh, was used on June 12 to maintain the balance between electricity consumption and production, the Ukrainian media reported, citing the Ukrenergo company.

During the spring and summer months of the current year, Ukraine has already received the emergency aid from Europe several times in order to maintain the balance between electricity production and consumption: from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. from the Romanian energy system on June 7, and the emergency assistance from Romania and Poland totaling 1,200 MWh was used on June 8. Prior to that, the emergency aid was provided from the Romanian power system on May 27.

Among the reasons of limited capacity in the grid, Ukrenergo listed the subsiding floods, a decline in power generation by hydropower plants, and a summer maintenance campaign at thermal power plants and some nuclear power units.
