U.S. Congress to support Ukraine as long as it takes - Biden

WASHINGTON. June 9 (Interfax) - U.S. President Joe Biden has no doubt that Congress will provide financial assistance for Ukraine as long as it takes.

"I believe we'll [...] support Ukraine as long as it takes," Biden said.

"We're [...] providing them the support Ukraine needs now on the battlefield and helping them strengthen their military over the long term," he said.

"There are [...] some voices today on Capitol Hill about whether or not we should continue to support Ukraine and for how long we should support them," Biden added. He said however that the overwhelming majority of members of Congress, including those who do not support him personally, would be ready to continue funding Ukraine.

The question on whether Congress would continue to allot funds for Ukraine was raised after midterm elections in the United States at the end of last year, after which the Republicans took charge of the House of Representatives. Republican congressmen frequently call for considering the amount and expediency of further assistance to Ukraine and wonder whether the U.S. control over Kiev's spending of the funds is effective.

In the U.S., Congress decides whether to allot funds for projects of the U.S. administration, including those assisting Ukraine.
