Artificial intelligence should not replace judges - Russian Supreme Court judge

MOSCOW. June 7 (Interfax) - Artificial intelligence should not replace real judges, Viktor Momotov, a judge and member of the Russian Supreme Court presidium, said.

"I doubt that a strong artificial intelligence should be able to replace a particular judge. That is due to the fact that the role of a judge and the position of a judge envisage certain social experience," Momotov said in a meeting of the Zamyatin Expert Club.

Artificial intelligence "is more of a mechanical machine with certain algorithms, which are set," he said.

"As for notions such as justice, as for notions such as mercy - all these things are related to humans," Momotov said.

Based on these principles, judges with certain social experience can determine a fair measure of punishment and responsibility for a person for committing this or that crime, Momotov said.
