Ukrainian Interior Ministry: 29 settlements in Kherson region flooded, 19 of them in territory controlled by Ukraine, 10 in uncontrolled one
MOSCOW. June 7 (Interfax) - A total of 19 populated localities in the Kherson region were effectively flooded following the disaster at the Kakhovka Hydropower Plant, of them, 19 are in the territory controlled by Ukraine and ten in the territory outside of its control, and over 1,560 people were evacuated, Ukrainian media outlets said, citing Interior Minister Igor Klimenko.
"Rescue services, police and volunteers are evacuating people from populated localities, which have been flooded, day and night," the Interior Ministry said on social networks.
"Over 1,560 people have been evacuated. Overnight, the water in Kherson rose by 1 meter, and it is expected to continue rising throughout the day. Some 1,600 rescue workers and policemen with about 300 items of hardware are operating in the region. If necessary, the number of centers offering assistance would be increased," Klimenko said.
In turn, Alexander Prokudin, the head of the Kherson regional military administration controlled by Kiev, said that 1,700 residents were evacuated from the region.
"The evacuation of the population is continuing in the Kherson region. The situation is under control. As of 1 p.m., 1,700 people were evacuated," Ukrainian media outlets cited Prokudin as saying on social networks.
