Maersk interested in concession to operate container terminal at Chernomorsk seaport

MOSCOW. May 31 (Interfax) - The Danish transport and logistics company A.P. Moller-Maersk AS has confirmed its interest in obtaining a concession to operate Chernomorsk Seaport's container terminal, Ukrainian media reported with reference to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority's (USPA) social media post.

"Representatives of A.P. Moller-Maersk AS (Denmark), the global leader in container shipping, have paid a working visit to Chernoporsk Seaport. During the meeting, the foreign partners and port representatives discussed prospects for expanding the company's operations on the Ukrainian market, including its possible involvement in upgrading the Ukrainian port infrastructure, particularly through being granted a concession for Chernomorsk Seaport's container terminal," it said.

Taking part in the meeting were USPA deputy head Alexei Vostrikov, head of its Chernomorsk branch Maxim Shirokov, Chernomorsk Seaport Director Vyacheslav Voloshin, APM Terminals Director for Global Project Implementation Pieter Bas Bredius, and Maersk Ukraine Ltd. CEO Roman Koloyanov.

The foreign guests visited the Chernomorsk Seaport territory to get firsthand information on its production capacity, infrastructure, and functionality, it said.

"The A.P. Moller-Maersk representatives have confirmed their interest in being granted a concession for the container terminal, which, in their opinion, would ensure not only its sustainable development and upgrading in line with modern global standards, but would also help considerably expand the region's trade and logistic infrastructure, create new jobs, and increase food and grain storage capacity," USPA said.

As reported earlier, the Ukrainian Ministry for the Development of Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure was preparing terminals 1 and 5 of Chernomorsk Seaport for concession.

Maersk Ukraine LTD has represented Maersk's interests in Ukraine and Moldova for 30 years.

Maersk Group is a transnational company headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. It employs nearly 90,000 people in over 130 countries. Its operating subsidiary Maersk Line is the world's largest container shipping company operating 580 container ships worldwide.

A concession is an agreement on temporarily granting the right to develop natural resources or operate businesses and other facilities belonging to a state or territorial community to foreign states, companies, or private individuals.
